Uniform Policy/Dress Code
Pre-Primary and Elementary
Discovery Montessori adopted a Uniform Policy in 1998 for children in the pre-primary through elementary programs.
Uniforms encourage independence in dressing by allowing the child to mix and match items and know they are dressed
appropriately. Wearing "school clothes" helps children keep in a school mindset. They also aid focus in the classroom
when children are less distracted by the clothing of others.
In designing the item and color list we attempted to make it easy and flexible for parents and comfortable for children. You
are welcome to buy clothing articles at any store as long as they conform to our item and color code, and the shirts, sweat
shirts, and blouses have a Discovery logo. Children should be suitably dressed for the weather, as they will be outside most
days.
Discovery will be returning to Lands End as a uniform provider as of June 1, 2010 and will also be working with a local uniform company, CP&S out of St. Augustine, FL. Samples of the 100% cotton CP&S polo's are available in the office. Visit Lands' End website here. Click on "School's Dress Code" to find our school's Preferred School Number and logo.
Colors: Navy Blue, Khaki and White. All tops, shirts, sweatshirts, jumpers, etc. must have the Discovery logo on them.
Clothing items: Polo-style collared shirts or collarless shirts (short and long sleeve), long pants, shorts, skirts, skorts,
jumpers, blouses, sweat shirts, and sweat pants are acceptable.
Shoes: We encourage soft-soled shoes in the classroom to reduce noise levels. These should be worn with socks and either
tie or Velcro snugly. Dress shoes, boots, loafers or slip-on shoes are discouraged, as they are not safe on outdoor climbing
equipment. All shoes must have a closed toe and cover the foot: no flip-flops, thongs, jellies, or sandals. Shoes with built-
in wheels may only be worn with the wheels removed and left at home.
Casual Fridays: Any t-shirt in any color with the Discovery logo on it may be worn on Fridays, this includes Fall Festival,
May Day, Earth Day and other specialty t-shirts.
Optional Dress Days: On indicated Optional Dress Days, usually the last Friday of each month, the children may wear
clothes of their choice to school.
Toddlers
Our school uniform policy does not apply to the toddlers. Self-care is important as our toddlers move toward
independence. Help your child choose clothing that is loose and manageable with fasteners that can be handled by the child.
Onesies and overalls with shoulder buckles are difficult for most toddlers to handle. As your child moves toward self-
toileting, it will be helpful to provide underpants, shorts and or pants with loose elastic waistbands, and a pair of socks.
Please avoid the use of pull-ups as these actually slow the progress toward independent toileting.
Although we provide aprons for messier work, keep in mind that young children love to play and experiment!
